He said some things which caused me to ponder upon some of my decisions, although i will try not to be wavered in my decision - My life my rules..cant rem which advert was that from. Anyway, he said that its difficult for the male gender to retire EXTREMELY early in Singapore due to several reason. Here they are(taken directly from forum):
- Patriarchal society. If you are a man - not working is just not the done thing.
- Very consumer driven. Singapore is wealthy and people live well, dress well and drive nice cars. There is also a distinct lake of 'Bohemia' and weirdness which makes being different frowned upon. This is a country that has laws for everything. You cannot chew gum and if you do not flush the toilet in a public place and caught you are fined.
- The other issue is this idea / cultural thing that one must look after the sons parents in old age. Lots of pressure on the sons to keep working and prosper.
So far, My plans only include my immediate family consisting of me, my wife and my future children. This once proves that plans are ever changing and we as humans must adapt. I know have to re-strategize to include all these costs which I have missed out. We learn everyday do we not?

ReplyDeleteActually I don't quite agree that it's difficult to retire early in Singapore. It's all down to good planning planning and planning. Even though cost of living in SG is high, I thought it was affordable for most of the citizens.
I come from another country where the median income for undergraduate is as low as S$300/month. Housing is in the range of S$200K easily now.
Having worked in Singapore and live here for the most part of my life, I think it's down to individual honestly speaking. If he/she is having difficulty retiring in SG, then he/she would have trouble retiring almost at any part of the world.

Not sure how can one comfortably early retire when there are dependents around?
ReplyDeleteProbably need huge investment portfolio and passive income.
Perhaps not a full retirement then, a semi-retirement maybe. Maybe by running a business or maybe some enjoyable stress free part time work. Haha, so many maybes, it's like giving myself uppercuts of doubt. I can only plan so far, still have to take the journey step my step.

DeleteThe quote is so true. Anyway, I agree that we tend to over complicate things, we think of a solution, and then we introduce doubt so we give ourselves another option. And in the end, we end up with too many and that becomes a problem in itself.

ReplyDeleteI am 54 and reaching 55 before year end. I spend my early yrs working in MNC and self employed for 18 yrs. i decided to fold up my business 1.5 yrs ago. i drove a cab part time (3 times)a week for less than a yr . I decided to give up driving and retire for good after a collision with a motorist. It is too risky driving a cab in spore road.I do have some savings to last me/my family for a quite long time.
My son is studying in Sydney and my daughter has started work. My wife is still working.
My problem is that I do not share with my friends/relatives that I have decided to withdraw from the workforce.
My perception is that I don't know how people will perceive me when they know that i am no more working.

My thoughts on this is that you have already worked so hard for so long. You have provided for your children to the best of your ability and even sent your son to study overseas. If you have enough to last your family a long time, no one has the right to judge you.
DeleteWe all only live such a short span of time on earth so why not enjoy a little if you have your finances settled.
As for the perception of people who really know you and care about you, I'm pretty sure they will congratulate you and be happy for you. The most they would do is poke a little harmless fun at you, like " wah, so shiok, retired already can stay at home shake leg." At least that's what I would do should people I know retire early.
As for the rest, I feel that its mainly jealousy of not being able to accomplish what you have that causes them to judge you in a negative way.
In any case, it's your life to live. So embrace the freedom and who cares what everyone else thinks anyway. Wish you and your family all the best.

DeleteYes, you will achieve yr dreams by age 45. However just like me when in my forties, your children will still be in school.
ReplyDeleteYou will be at your prime age. Give yourself another 5-10 yrs (by then, you will be in yr 50's) and yr children wii be in university or graduate.
You can really smell the roses with your wife as your children will have lives on their own.
